Madras High Court directs Husbandry Department to come up with a holistic plan for general treatment and vaccination of animals in the state [READ ORDER]

A division bench of the Madras High Court comprising Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy on Wednesday, June 9, 2021, while hearing a petition seeking guidelines to ensure proper food and water to stray animals during pandemic, directed the Husbandry Department to chalk out a plan for general treatment of stray animals incorporating scientific and human approach during normal times.

The letter sent by the Director of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services to the Registry of the Court apprised the Court that 2500 kg of dog feed and 200 kg of cat feed had been procured to ensure the feeding of stray and abandoned animals with the second round of procurement proposed to be made immediately and distributed once the first consignment is exhausted.

The bench directing the department to also chalk out a plan for the vaccination of stray dogs and cats, observed, A comprehensive plan dealing with vaccinating stray dogs and cats, if necessary, or collaring them or the like should also be thought of in the best interest of both the animals and the human population that they come to contact with.

Appreciating the prompt release of fund by the Governor and the State for the noble cause, the court expressed expecting similar actions by private parties to contribute money and material for the stray animals during the pandemic.
