Mamata Banerjee Challenges Suvendu Adhikaris Bhabanipur Win in Calcutta HC Election Petition

Former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has approached the Calcutta High Court challenging the election of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari from the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency. The election petition was filed before the High Court on Tuesday, with Banerjee personally visiting the court premises for the filing.

The challenge arises from the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, in which Adhikari secured a significant victory over Banerjee in Bhabanipur, a constituency long regarded as her political stronghold. According to the declared results, Adhikari polled 73,917 votes, defeating Banerjee, who secured 58,812 votes, by a margin of 15,105 votes.

Banerjee had earlier alleged irregularities in the counting process. Shortly before the declaration of results, she claimed that her polling agents were prevented from entering the counting centre and asserted that the electoral process had been compromised.

The election petition seeks judicial scrutiny of the Bhabanipur result and marks Banerjee’s first formal legal challenge to the outcome of the closely watched electoral contest.

Senior Advocate and TMC leader Kalyan Bandopadhyay alleged that the counting was carried out in an “improper manner.”
