Nagpur Court Sentences Ex BrahMos Engineer Nishant Agarwal to Life Imprisonment for Espionage

(Nagpur) Maharashtra: Nagpur District Court sentenced Nishant Agarwal, former engineer of BrahMos Aerospace Pvt Ltd, arrested in 2018 for spying for Pakistan's intelligence agency ISI, to life imprisonment under sections 3 & 5 of Official Secrets Act (OSA) and imposed a fine of Rs 3000.

Additional sessions court judge MV Deshpande stated in the order that Agarwal was convicted under section 235 of the Criminal Procedure Code for an offence punishable under section 66 (f) of the IT Act and various sections of the Official Secrets Act (OSA).

"The court sentenced Agarwal to life imprisonment and RI for 14 years under the Official Secrets Act and fined him Rs 3,000," said Special Public Prosecutor Jyoti Vajani. Agarwal was granted bail by the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court last April.

Who is Nishant Agrawal?

In 2018, Nishant Agrawal was nabbed in a joint operation by the Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squads (ATS) at BrahMos' Wardha Road facility for allegedly leaking data to ISI.

Nishant Agarwal, was a senior systems engineer at BrahMos Aerospaces unit at Butibori, near Nagpur. In his mid-20s, Agarwal headed the Hydraulics-Pneumatics and Warhead Integration wing of BrahMos' production department. Hailing from Roorkee in Uttarakhand, Agarwal awarded the "Young Scientist Award" for the year 2017-18.
