NEW DELHI: Senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy on Monday asked the Supreme Court to urgently take up his plea seeking national heritage status for Ram Setu.
As Swamy mentioned the matter before a bench of Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, it said, the case will be listed.
"They still have not given a decision saying yes or no or if they are going to declare it a National Heritage site or not," Swamy told the court.
He further said that the Centre was asked to inform of a stand on January 19, but nothing has been filed on record and now the Constitution bench is also over.
The CJI, however, said that another constitution bench is starting Tuesday, but we will definitely list the matter.
On January 19, the Centre had told the court that the process for declaring Ram Setu as national monument is underway in the Ministry of Culture.
The court had then asked Swamy to provide additional materials to the Ministry, which was looking into the issue.
The court allowed Swamy to make a representation while granting him liberty to take requisite legal recourse if aggrieved by the final decision.
In his plea, Swamy sought a direction to the Union government and the National Monument Authority to declare 'Ram Setu' as a monument of national importance.
He claimed the Centre has already accepted existence of 'Ram Setu' and a meeting was also convened in 2017 to consider his demand but nothing had happened afterwards.
