Preliminary inquiry needed on sexual harrasment charges, Delhi police to Supreme Court on women wrestlers plea

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police on Wednesday submitted before the Supreme Court that some preliminary inquiry may be needed to be conducted before lodging an FIR on a complaint by women wrestlers alleging sexual harassment by Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

Making a mentioning, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Delhi police, submitted before a bench of Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha that some preliminary inquiry may be required on wrestlers' complaint but if this court orders, then FIR can be registered.

The bench also said that the court would also not want to do something unless there is some material.

The bench asked Mehta to furnish the material on Friday, the next date of hearing.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for wrestlers, submitted that he would also like place additional materials before the court.

On Tuesday, the court had issued notice to the Delhi police on a plea by a group of women wrestlers, saying these are "serious allegations".

Olympian wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat and other top Indian grapplers have resumed their protest against the WFI chief in Jantar Mantar in Central Delhi.

They alleged that no action has been taken on their complaints against the WFI chief for sexual harassment and criminal intimidation.

On January 23, the Sports Ministry formed a committee, headed by boxing legend M C Mary Kom to probe the allegations against Singh. It had submitted its report in the first week of April but its findings are yet to be made public.

In their plea, the women athletes said the attitude of the police was shockingly rude towards them as they did not take any action on their complaint filed on April 21.
