Prisoners Enjoying Special Facilities In Jail, SC Asks Centre To Respond

The Supreme Court today i.e., November 22, 2018, took note of the pathetic condition of the Indian jails and expressed grave concern over prisoners enjoying special facilities.

A Bench comprising of Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice Deepak Gupta referring to newspaper reports regarding certain inmates enjoying special treatment in jails said that What is going on? A parallel system is running in jails? Are there special rights in jails?

Further, Justice Lokur, referring to a newspaper report pertaining to Tihar jail, questioned Additional Solicitor General Aman Lekhi and said that What is going on in Tihar? People are enjoying TVs, Sofas. What is the governments answer? Will you say you are the Centre and it is a State issue?

To which ASG said that I am with Your Lordships. This has to be tackled.

The matter has now been posted for Monday next week, on the demand of ASG to seek instructions from the Central government.
