In a fresh trouble for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, a Patna court has summoned him to appear before it on April 12 to record his statement in a defamation case days after he got convicted and sentenced to two years jail for his statement 'why all thieves had Modi surname' made in 2019 in Karnataka's Kolar.
Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Rajya Sabha member Sushil Kumar Modi filed the case against Gandhi for the statement made during campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, with his remark made during the 2019 Lok Sabha election that all those having Modi surname are thieves, in Kolar in Karnataka, insulted Backward Class people like me, and I had filed a defamation petition against him at the court of Patnas Chief Judicial Magistrate. Now the MP/MLA Court has issued summons to him to appear before it to record his statement, Sushil Modi said reportedly.
Rahul Gandhi had to surrender in the case on July 6, 2019 and currently he is on bail in the case, he added.
Besides Sushil Modi, BJP leaders Nitin Navin and Sanjiv Chaurasia and the partys youth wing leader, Manish Kumar, have recorded their statements in the case.
On March 23, a Surat court had held guilty Gandhi of defamation and awarded him maximum two years jail. A day after Gandhi was declared as disqualified as an MP from Wayanad constituency in Kerala. Subsequently, he had been asked to vacate his official bungalow.
