SC Directs Gujarat Govt To Provide Rs 50 Lakh Compensation, Govt Job To Gujarat Riot Gang Rape Victim

The Supreme Court today (April 23, 2019) directed the Gujarat government to provide Rs 50 lakh compensation to Bilkis Bano, the woman who was gang raped during Gujarat riots of 2002.

A Bench comprising of Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, Justices Deepak Gupta and Justice Sanjiv Khanna also directed the state to provide her a government job and accommodation at a place of her choice.

The rape survivor approached the apex court seeking exemplary compensation, after declining the offer of Rs 5 lakh compensation made by the Gujarat Government.

Further, she also sought disciplinary proceedings against the police officials who were convicted by the Bombay High Court in the case.

In regard to which, the apex court had asked the State to take disciplinary action in two weeks against the erring police officials and to place before the court the order passed in the proceedings. The court then listed the matter for today.
