SC Issues Notice To Election Commission In Pleas Against Discrepancies Between Total Voter Turnout And Final Vote Counts

The Supreme Court today (December 13, 2019) issued a notice to the Election Commission in a plea filed by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) over allegations of discrepancies in the final vote counts and the voter turnout at EVMs in 347 constituencies in the 2019 Lok Sabha Polls.

The Chief Justice of India, SA Bobde headed the bench hearing the matter and posted it for hearing in February, 2020 next.

The two main NGOs involved were the Association for Democratic Reforms and the Common Cause which sought a direction through the petition to the Election Commission of India to come up with a strong procedure to investigate the reported discrepancies in the voter turnout and the number of votes counted in different constituencies. Out of a total of 547 constituencies discrepancies were found in 347 seats.

The petition clarified that the current law has provisions for dispute resolution only through an election petition and that there is no provision for the resolution of problems regarding the discrepancies reported all over the country.
