New Delhi: In a significant hearing, the Supreme Court on Thursday (24 Oct 2024) addressed the ongoing suo motu case concerning the heritage building of the Bombay High Court and the issue of additional land allotment for construction purposes. The special bench, comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice BR Gavai, and Justice JB Pardiwala, took up the matter to review the project’s progress.
Supreme Court Reviews Progress on Bombay High Court Heritage Building Restoration
During the proceedings, Advocate General Dr. Saraf, representing the state of Maharashtra, provided the bench with an updated status on the project. According to the submissions, the next allotment of land for the construction of additional facilities will be handed over by December 2024. Dr. Saraf also informed the court that expressions of interest have been received from architects, and a follow-up meeting with the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court is scheduled for October 30, 2024. Additionally, a structural report concerning the Public Works Department (PWD) building has been requested.
Maharashtra AG Submits Timeline for Land Allotment and Architect Engagement
After hearing the submissions, the bench directed that an updated status report be filed by January 2025. The court emphasized the importance of monitoring the progress, given the heritage and operational significance of the Bombay High Court building.
The hearing concluded with directions to expedite the necessary steps to ensure the smooth continuation of the project.
