Ukraine Russia War Indian Students Medical Education

Students pursuing professional medical education at various institutions across Ukraine have approached the Supreme Court, requesting that the Union formulate a policy as a special measure to allow Indian medical students studying in Ukraine to continue their studies.

Students in the petition have also asked for infrastructural and academic support for medical students who have been relocated from Ukraine owing to the continuing crisis between Russia and Ukraine.

According to the writ, all of these students were sent to ongoing conflict countries by their parents, who mortgaged their properties  in banks in the hopes of securing a bright future for their children. However, in the current situation, parents must pay interest on the loan amounts for no reason, in addition to the roadblock career of their children.

"An abrupt disruption to their academic schedule has put their careers in a pile of ambiguity and is in question The future of the rescued students is in quandary and is completely shattered. Although the lives of such students were secured, the wrecked hopes of the students regarding their future/career continue to aggregate thereby causing distress and fraught in the fragile young minds," the plea filed through M/S Ramesh Allanki and Associate states .

The petitioners further contend that under current rules, students pursuing education abroad have no option but to return to India if they wish to discontinue their studies in a foreign country.

Advocate Aruna Gupta's in her plea further states that the students are left with no other option but to recommence their study from level one of the respective degree.

It should be noted that, in response to petitions seeking the evacuation of Indians stranded in Ukraine as a result of the Russian invasion, India's Attorney General, KK Venugopal, stated on March 28 , 2022  that the government of India, along with nationals from 20 other countries, has evacuated 22,500 Indian students from Ukraine. The Attorney General stated that the Government of India is looking into the question of continuing education for students who have been returned back as a result of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and will make a decision .
