Attorney General granted sanction under Section 15 of the Contempt of Courts Act 1971 to proceed with a criminal contempt case against You Tuber and journalist Ajeet Bharti for using derogatory and objectionable remarks for the Supreme Court and other judges on numerous social media platforms.

As per reliable reports, the sanction came in response to a letter sent by a lawyer Pratik Kumar. This instance is happening for the second time when the Attorney General has granted sanction for Criminal Contempt of Court against this You Tuber for using vulgar language in the context of the Supreme Court.

Earlier, a student named Kritika Singh from Doctor Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University had written to the AG for highlighting his You Tube video which allegedly consisted of outrageous and gross statements for the Supreme Court.  She requested that Contempt action be taken against him. The Attorney General had thus granted sanction for the criminal proceedings against Ajeet Bharti to be initiated in September 2021 as a result of this letter.

LEGAL PROVISIONS

The consent of the Attorney General is essential for filing a Criminal Contempt of Court petition by a private individual in the Supreme Court as per Section 15 of the Contempt of Courts Act.

 REASON FOR GRANTING SANCTION

The Attorney General stated that Court bashing is becoming a past time for some. Furthermore, he also said that the statements made by Bharti were vulgar, vituperative, outrageous and gross and undoubtedly were intended to lower and question the authority of the Supreme Court of India.

"These statements are vulgar, vituperative, outrageous and gross and undoubtedly tend to lower the authority of the Supreme Court of India and would seriously undermine the confidence that the people have in the institution. I have already granted consent earlier for contempt to be initiated against him," reads the letter
