Justice Arun Chandra Upadhyay passes away at age 69

Justice Arun Chandra Upadhyay passes away

Former judge of Gauhati High Court, Justice Arun Chandra Upadhyay, passed away at a private hospital in Guwahati, on Tuesday (June 2nd 2020). He was 69 years old.

Justice Upadhyay was the youngest grandson of freedom fighter and founder president of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) and brother of Ex-Tezpur MP Swarup Upadhyay. He had completed B. Sc from Darrang College, Tezpur, and did his LLB from Guwahati. 

Justice Upadhyay joined the Bar in 1976 and practiced mainly in the Gauhati High Court and the district courts in Kamrup.

He held the post of Secretary, Judicial Department of the Assam Government, and Additional Judge of Gauhati High Court, in December 2008 and was thereafter appointed as a permanent judge of Gauhati High Court in November 2009 and retired in 2012. He was associated with Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh (BGP) as its well-wisher after he retired.

Mourning his death, Bharatiya Gorkha Yuva Parisangh (BhaGoYuP) President Nanda Kerati Dewan, said, Today we lost an elder who served judiciary and contributed to community and society. Its an irreparable loss to the legal and judicial fraternity of Assam. May the departed soul rest in peace.

He further added, Justice Upadhyay was a fountainhead of knowledge and a source of inspiration for the judicial and legal fraternity in the community.

Assam state BGP President Prakash Dahal and General Secretary Bimal Pradhan in a joint statement condoled the death of Justice Upadhyay and added, Gorkha community lost a flag bearer son of soil today.

Late Justice Upadhyay was born at Mazgaon, Behali in Sonitpur district of Assam in 1951.
