Manan Kumar Mishra re elected as Chairman of Bar Council of India for a historic seventh term

New Delhi: In a landmark moment for the Indian legal fraternity, Senior Advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Manan Kumar Mishra has been re-elected unopposed as the Chairman of the Bar Council of India (BCI) for the seventh consecutive term. This historic victory underscores the unwavering confidence that the 27 lakh-strong legal community continues to place in his leadership.

Shri Manan Kumar Mishra’s electoral dominance remains unmatched. Having secured a decisive win in the Bihar State Bar Council elections for the seventh time, he was also re-elected unopposed as a member of the Bar Council of India from Bihar for the third consecutive term last year. His ascension to the Chairmanship for the seventh term further cements his position as a towering figure in the legal profession.

Despite initial speculations about a competitive contest—given his recent election to the Rajya Sabha from Bihar—his unrivaled influence, deep-rooted connections, and strategic leadership ensured that no serious challenge materialized. His re-election serves as a testament to his ability to unify the legal fraternity across India.

Manan Kumar Mishra: A Stalwart Defender of Advocates’ Rights

Over the years, Shri Mishra has consistently championed the interests of lawyers, ensuring that their voices are heard at the highest levels of governance. One of his most defining milestones was his decisive intervention in stopping the Central Government’s proposed amendment to the Advocates Act. His firm opposition, relentless negotiations, and strategic advocacy successfully led to the withdrawal of the proposal, reinforcing his commitment to protecting the sanctity of the legal profession.

His influence extends beyond the legal corridors, earning him immense respect among intellectuals and the general public, a factor that played a crucial role in his election to the Rajya Sabha. While some speculated that his parliamentary role might dilute his stronghold in the legal community, this re-election decisively proves otherwise. His leadership continues to be unshaken, despite shifting political tides and external challenges.

A Vision for a Stronger Legal Fraternity

Following his re-election, Shri Mishra expressed heartfelt gratitude to the legal fraternity for their unwavering trust and support. He reaffirmed his dedication to advocate welfare, emphasizing that the independence of the Bar must remain sacrosanct.

In his post-election address, he announced that the Advocates Amendment Bill would be introduced to ensure welfare provisions for lawyers while eliminating contentious elements. He also highlighted plans to incorporate structured training programs for young lawyers under the Advocates Act and the long-awaited Advocate Protection Act.

Upcoming Developments in the Bar Council

The election for the Vice Chairman of the Bar Council of India remains underway, with Mr. S. Prabhakaran (Tamil Nadu & Puducherry) and Mr. Ved Prakash Sharma (Delhi) contesting for the post. The election results are expected soon, after which the executive committee members will be chosen under Shri Mishra’s leadership.

Additionally, a national meeting of advocate representatives and members of State Bar Councils is scheduled for May 17 in New Delhi.

This high-level assembly will address key issues, including:
• Advocate Welfare
• The Advocate Protection Act
• Policy reforms shaping the future of the legal profession

A Legacy of Unshakable Leadership

Shri Manan Kumar Mishra’s re-election is not just a political victory—it is a resounding affirmation of the legal fraternity’s trust in his vision and leadership. His tenure promises continued advocacy for the legal profession, ensuring that the voices of lawyers across India resonate with strength and dignity at every level of power.
