New Delhi: The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has issued a formal resolution expressing “deep concern and shock” over the reported incident before the Andhra Pradesh High Court in which a young advocate was allegedly directed to be taken into judicial custody for 24 hours during court proceedings.
The resolution, dated May 6, 2026, pertains to an incident reported to have taken place on May 5, 2026, before Justice Tarlada Rajasekhar Rao of the Andhra Pradesh High Court. According to the SCBA, publicly circulating videos of the proceedings show the young advocate repeatedly expressing regret and seeking pardon before the Court.
The development has sparked widespread discussion within the legal fraternity, with members of the Bar across the country reacting strongly to the courtroom episode. In its resolution, the SCBA noted that the incident has caused “serious concern” among advocates, especially young members of the profession.
The Association emphasized that the relationship between the Bench and the Bar is founded upon “mutual respect, dignity, patience, and institutional balance.” While acknowledging that the majesty and authority of courts must always be respected and preserved, the SCBA stated that the exercise of judicial powers must equally reflect “restraint, proportionality, fairness, and compassion.”
The resolution further observed that the rule of law, being the foundation of the constitutional system, requires both maintenance of courtroom decorum and fairness in the exercise of judicial authority. It added that judicial strength is reflected through patience and balanced conduct, particularly while dealing with young lawyers who are still learning and evolving within the profession.
Importantly, the SCBA also raised concerns regarding the potential long-term impact such incidents may have on young advocates and the functioning of the legal system. The resolution stated that any action causing “fear, humiliation, or intimidation” among young advocates could adversely affect both the independence of the Bar and the optimal operation of the justice delivery system.
Taking the matter further, the SCBA has urged the Chief Justice of India to take “institutional cognizance” of the incident. The Association requested that the relevant records and proceedings be called for and that appropriate corrective or administrative measures be considered in the interest of preserving public confidence in the judiciary and maintaining cordial Bar-Bench relations.
The resolution has been issued under the signature of SCBA Honorary Secretary Pragya Baghel and comes amid growing discussions within legal circles over courtroom conduct, judicial restraint, and the professional environment faced by young members of the Bar.
The incident has rapidly gained national attention after videos from the courtroom proceedings surfaced online, triggering extensive debate across legal and public platforms regarding the balance between maintaining court discipline and ensuring fair treatment of advocates during proceedings.
