Rahul Gandhi Challenges PM Modi to Open Debate on ‘Foreign Help’ After Prime Minister’s Opposition Remarks

NEW DELHI : Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Monday challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to an open debate over allegations of foreign assistance, accusing the Prime Minister of relying on foreign support to become and remain in office.

The challenge came after Modi, during his address at the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas celebrations in Gujarat on October 31, accused opposition forces of attempting to destabilise the country with foreign assistance and spreading misinformation through social media. In a post on X, Gandhi alleged that Modi had benefited from foreign assistance and that foreign entities supported the Prime Minister’s financial system and political position. He challenged Modi to discuss the allegations publicly, saying he was prepared to debate the issue at any venue and at any time.

Gandhi’s remarks added a new development to the political exchange between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), following the Prime Minister’s criticism of the Opposition during the National Unity Day celebrations.

Rahul Gandhi’s Challenge Follows Modi’s Remarks on Foreign Support

Gandhi’s response followed Modi’s address at Ekta Nagar in Gujarat, where the Prime Minister marked the 151st birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

During the address, Modi criticised the Opposition for what he described as its failure to perform its democratic responsibility of questioning government policies constructively. He said the Opposition had become an “Avrodh Paksh” (obstructionist bloc) rather than a “Virodh Paksh” (opposition bloc). The Prime Minister also referred to the activities of certain forces within the country, alleging that they were attempting to create instability by spreading rumours and misinformation. He questioned whether opposition leaders were receiving support from forces opposed to India and raised concerns about their foreign engagements.

Modi said social media was being used to spread rumours and damage the country’s image. He also called for greater public awareness of activities that he alleged were intended to undermine national unity. The remarks did not directly name Rahul Gandhi, but the Congress leader responded on November 2 by challenging the Prime Minister to an open debate on the issue of foreign assistance.

Gandhi Makes Allegations About Foreign Financial and Social Media Support

In his response, Gandhi alleged that foreign assistance had played a role in Modi’s political rise and continued tenure as Prime Minister. The Congress leader also claimed that India’s financial system was supported and controlled by foreign entities and alleged that foreign social media platforms backed Modi. Gandhi challenged the Prime Minister to discuss these claims publicly, saying he was prepared to appear on any platform at any time. He also alleged that Modi would avoid such a debate.

The claims made by Gandhi are political allegations and have not been established as findings by a competent authority. The challenge itself does not constitute evidence of foreign interference in India’s political or financial systems.

The exchange reflects the competing claims made by the two political leaders over foreign influence, the role of social media and the conduct of the Opposition. Modi had raised concerns about foreign support for opposition activities, while Gandhi countered by alleging that the Prime Minister himself benefited from foreign backing.

Political Exchange Comes Amid Wider Opposition-BJP Dispute

The latest exchange comes amid continuing political differences between the Congress and the BJP over the functioning of democratic institutions, electoral processes and the role of the Opposition. Modi’s October 31 address included criticism of opposition parties, whom he accused of obstructing national development and undermining constitutional norms. He also referred to the need to recognise alleged attempts to create instability within the country.

Gandhi’s response on November 2 shifted the focus towards the issue of foreign assistance and the Prime Minister’s own political position. His challenge to Modi was framed as an invitation to publicly examine the allegations raised by both sides.

As of November 3, no public confirmation of a debate between the two leaders had been established. The exchange remains a political dispute involving allegations made by the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition.

The latest developments have brought the question of foreign influence into the centre of the political conversation, with both leaders making claims about the role of external forces in India’s domestic affairs. The allegations remain contested, and no independent finding establishing the claims made by either leader has been cited in the public statements reviewed for this repor

However, it was not possible then. But now, when the Modi government has called a special session on the same September 18, questions are arising: Will the changes that couldn't happen in history back then happen now? Will the attempt made 74 years ago to determine the country's name be fulfilled in the year 2023 on September 18?
