Prayagraj: The world’s largest spiritual gathering, the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, is set to begin in Prayagraj. This grand event, deeply rooted in tradition and devotion, will bring together over 40 crore devotees, pilgrims, and tourists from around the world. It’s more than just a festival; it’s a celebration of faith, unity, and the timeless pursuit of spiritual enlightenment.
But the Maha Kumbh Mela is more than just a spiritual gathering; it is a major boost to economic activity and a center of global academic interest.
Over the next 45 days, this event is expected to generate ₹2 to ₹2.5 lakh crore in revenue, marking a transformative milestone for Uttar Pradesh economy. With visitors from across India and the world, sectors like tourism, hospitality, retail, and transportation will see unparalleled growth.
According to the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the last Kumbh Mela in 2019 generated a revenue of ₹1.2 lakh crore, employing over 6 lakh workers.
The budget for the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 marks a substantial increase compared to previous years. During the 2013 Maha Kumbh Mela under the Samajwadi Party’s tenure, the event’s allocation stood at ₹1,152 crore. In stark contrast, the 2025 Maha Kumbh Mela under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s administration is projected to cost approximately ₹5,010 crore, including a special grant of ₹2,010 crore from the central government.
This massive leap from the ₹1,152 crore spent in 2013 reflects a monumental focus on infrastructure and logistics, positioning the event as a global spectacle.
The Maha Kumbh Nagar, spread across 40 square kilometers, is a temporary district with 25 sectors and 56 police stations, designed to accommodate 40 crore pilgrims—a staggering increase from 16 crore in 2013. Improved sanitation with 1.5 lakh toilets, enhanced transportation with over 3,000 special trains and 200 charter flights, and state-of-the-art lighting with 67,000 streetlights highlight the massive preparation behind this event.
This massive gathering is all set to feature cutting-edge technology, including AI cameras, underwater drones, and an AI-driven parking system. With a 7,000 crore rupee investment, the Maha Kumbh is a hub for economic activity and crowd management.
What’s more, this year’s Maha Kumbh has attracted global academic interest. Prestigious institutions such as Harvard, Stanford, the London School of Economics, Kyoto University, AIIMS, IIM Ahmedabad, and IIT Kanpur will be present to study the economic, social, and logistical aspects of this unparalleled event.
But the question remains: can Uttar Pradesh overcome the logistical challenges of managing this massive gathering while ensuring safety, sustainability, and success? With the groundwork laid and a budget unlike any before, all eyes are on Prayagraj as it gears up for an event that promises to be a historic milestone in India’s cultural and economic narrative.
