Delhi HC Disposes PIL Over Shoorveer Song In Mirzapur Movie After Its Removal

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has disposed of a Public Interest Litigation seeking removal of the musical composition "Shoorveer" from "Mirzapur: the Movie", after being told that the song had already been taken out of the film, and recorded that respondent no. 3 would voluntarily donate Rs. 50,000 to the Army Welfare Fund.

A Bench of Acting Chief Justice Nitin Wasudeo Sambre and Justice Sanjay Sharma was hearing the petition, which concerned what it described as the misuse of a dedicated song attributable to the heroic conduct of Late Maharana Pratap and his followers. The petitioner had sought directions to respondents no. 1 and 2 to remove the composition, which was played as background music in the climax scene of the film.

Counsel for the respondents, particularly respondent no. 3, stated on instructions that the song had been removed and had not been played in the film since 17 September 2026. A certificate depicting voluntary deletion by respondent no. 3 was placed on record. The certificate, an endorsement issued by the Central Board of Film Certification, Mumbai, records that the song was replaced with background music and gives the final duration of the film as 197.19 minutes.

Counsel for the petitioner did not dispute these facts. The Court accepted the submission of respondent no. 3 and, as prayed by the petitioner's counsel, held that since the issue sought to be canvassed in the petition stands redressed, no further orders were required. The PIL was accordingly disposed of.

Counsel for respondent no. 3 further stated that, in view of the conduct of the respondents, an amount of Rs. 50,000 would be voluntarily donated to the Army Welfare Fund within one week, with the acknowledgement to be produced on record.

The Court directed that if the acknowledgement is not produced within two weeks, the matter will be listed for reconsideration only on the limited aspect of the cost to be paid by respondent no. 3. If the acknowledgement is produced, the order disposing of the writ petition will govern the proceedings. Pending applications were also disposed of.
