New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has issued summons to Priya Kapur and the children of actress Karisma Kapoor in a legal suit filed by Rani Kapur, the 80-year-old widow of late industrialist Dr. Surinder Kapur, alleging that a “fraudulent family trust” was orchestrated to unlawfully strip her of her entire estate and family legacy.
Justice Mini Pushkarna took up the case and issued notice on Rani Kapur’s application for interim relief, directing the 23 defendants to file their written statements within 30 days.
The court noted the complex family dynamics involved in the dispute, with defendants including Priya Kapur, her son Azarias, and Sunjay Kapur’s children with Karisma Kapoor, Samaira and Kiaan.
Rani Kapur, the mother of late Sunjay Kapur (former chairperson of Sona Comstar), asserts that she was the sole beneficiary of her husband’s estate following his death in 2015. However, she claims that after suffering a stroke in 2017, her son and his third wife, Priya Kapur, exploited her physical dependence to transfer her assets into the Rani Kapur Family Trust without her informed consent.
The plaintiff alleges that her signatures on the trust deed were forged, a claim she states is corroborated by a forensic expert. She further contends that the trust was designed to leave her “effectively penniless,” as the assets were earmarked exclusively for Sunjay Kapur during his lifetime, with 60% of the corpus going to Priya Kapur and the remaining 40% to her grandchildren upon his demise.
According to the suit, the alleged fraud was discovered only after Sunjay Kapur’s death due to cardiac arrest in June 2025. The plaintiff’s counsel highlighted a timeline of events following his death, stating that on June 13, Priya Kapur allegedly became a Director in a leading company holding assets, and on June 20, she reportedly became the Managing Director of the main holding company with a salary of ₹1 crore plus perks.
The suit further alleges that Rani Kapur’s access to company information was blocked under the false pretext that her email account had been “hacked.”
The legal battle also saw a shift in benches during the proceedings. On Wednesday, Justice Vikas Mahajan recused himself from hearing the matter and directed it to be listed before another bench. On Thursday, Justice Mini Pushkarna took up the case and issued notice on Rani Kapur’s application for interim relief.
The court directed the 23 defendants, including Priya Kapur, her son Azarias, and Sunjay Kapur’s children with Karisma Kapoor, Samaira and Kiaan, to file their written statements within 30 days.
The dispute involves several high-profile figures. Sunjay Kapur was previously married to designer Nandita Mahtani and actress Karisma Kapoor before marrying Priya Kapur in 2017. Notably, the suit was filed just days after the Delhi High Court reserved its verdict in a separate case brought by Samaira and Kiaan Kapur, who sought to restrain Priya Kapur and Azarias from creating third-party interests in their late father’s properties.
In its directions, the court stated that all defendants must file their written statements within the stipulated 30-day period and scheduled the next hearing for March 23, 2026.
