NLUJA Assams Student Bar Council Issues Strong Statement of Solidarity Condemning Kolkata Medical Student Rape and Murder

Assam: The Student Bar Council of National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam, has issued a strong statement of solidarity regarding the rape and murder of a 2nd-year PG medical student at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The statement expresses deep anguish and outrage over the brutal crime, condemning it as an act against humanity and the medical profession.

The Student Bar Council strongly criticized the handling of the case by various authorities. They stated, “We vehemently condemn the hospital authorities’ handling of this case, noting with grave concern the significant lapses on the part of the hospital administration. Their failure to file the case promptly and their subsequent actions demonstrate a disturbing level of apathy, carelessness, and undue haste in addressing this heinous crime.”

The statement also highlighted concerns about the administration’s initial insistence on calling the incident a suicide, delays in conducting a proper autopsy, attempts to prevent third parties from examining the remains, and the state police’s lackadaisical attitude in handling the case.

While welcoming the Calcutta High Court’s decision to transfer the investigation to the CBI, the Council demanded swift justice, stating, “We demand that those behind this gruesome and barbaric act of inhumanity be brought to justice as soon as possible.”

The Council expressed full solidarity with the medical community’s protests and called for comprehensive reforms in medical institutions to address unsafe working conditions and inadequate security measures.

In conclusion, the statement emphasized the need to protect the dignity and safety of medical professionals, asserting, “We stand together in the pursuit of justice, in the hope for a safer future, and in the unwavering belief that the sanctity of human life and the dignity of those who dedicate themselves to preserving it must be protected at all costs.
