New Delhi: Taking cognizance of complaints regarding unauthorized tree cutting in Delhi’s Civil Lines area, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Tree Officer to verify the allegations and initiate necessary punitive and remedial measures as mandated under the Delhi Preservation of Trees Act, 1994.
The Tribunal was hearing Original Application No. 517/2025 filed by Ravi Kant Sharma, alleging that 4–5 mature trees were illegally cut within and outside the premises of House No. 1-E/45 and 1-D/45, Mall Road, Civil Lines, Delhi. The applicant claimed that certain private respondents were responsible for the act.
During the proceedings, the Tribunal noted that a complaint had already been lodged on September 1, 2025, before the Deputy Conservator of Forests, who also serves as the Tree Officer under the Delhi Preservation of Trees Act, 1994. The Bench observed that it was the duty of the Tree Officer to verify the allegations and, if found correct, to initiate legal action against those responsible.
The Principal Bench comprising Justice Prakash Shrivastava (Chairperson) and Dr. A. Senthil Vel (Expert Member) directed:
“Let this exercise be completed by the Tree Officer as expeditiously as possible, preferably within a period of three months from the date of receipt of a copy of this order.”
With these directions, the Tribunal disposed of the matter on October 13, 2025.
