Mizoram Government Appoints Anando Mukherjee As Additional Advocate General

Aizawl: The Governor of Mizoram has designated Mr. Anando Mukherjee, Advocate-on-Record of the Supreme Court of India, as Additional Advocate General for the State of Mizoram before the Supreme Court of India and all other courts, tribunals and quasi-judicial fora where the Government of Mizoram is a party.

The appointment was notified by the Law & Judicial Department, Government of Mizoram, through Notification No. A-12037/1/2025-L&J-Part(1) dated August 31, 2026. The designation has taken effect from September 1, 2026, and will be governed by the same terms and conditions applicable to his appointment as Standing Counsel for the State.

Mr. Mukherjee’s elevation follows his earlier appointment as Standing Counsel for the State of Mizoram. In January 2024, the Government of Mizoram appointed him to represent the State before the Supreme Court, High Courts, tribunals and other quasi-judicial bodies. He assumed the role with effect from January 29, 2024.

Mr. Mukherjee is an Advocate-on-Record of the Supreme Court of India and Partner at Singh and Mukherjee Chambers. He has also been appointed as Advocate-on-Record for the State of Jharkhand and  was also in the panel for the State of West Bengal. His professional work has consequently involved representation of government authorities and public institutions in proceedings before the Supreme Court and other judicial and quasi-judicial forums

His appearance in Supreme Court and National Green Tribunal records reflects a practice involving matters of public importance, including environmental protection, government accountability, statutory compliance and the rights and obligations of public authorities.

In that capacity, Mr. Mukherjee has appeared in proceedings concerning important constitutional, administrative, environmental and public-interest issues involving Mizoram.

His designation as Additional Advocate General therefore marks a continuation and expansion of the legal responsibility entrusted to him by the State Government. The new role authorises him to represent Mizoram across a broad range of proceedings in which the State is a party, including matters before the Supreme Court of India, other courts, tribunals and quasi-judicial forums.

With his prior experience as Standing Counsel and his continuing role as an Advocate-on-Record, Mr. Mukherjee brings institutional familiarity with Mizoram’s cases and government departments. His elevation is expected to ensure continuity in the State’s representation while providing an expanded legal mandate for handling matters before different forums.
