Allahabad HC Bar Association Threatens Boycott of Justice Ajay Bhanots Court Over Advocates Alleged Humiliation

Prayagraj: The High Court Bar Association, Allahabad has written to the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court alleging that an advocate was humiliated in the courtroom of Justice Ajay Bhanot on 27 October 2026, and has warned that it will boycott the Judge’s court if appropriate action is not taken.

The letter, dated 27.10.2026, is addressed to the Chief Justice through the Registrar General and is signed by the newly elected office-bearers of the Association, President Dr. C.P. Upadhyay, Senior Advocate, and General Secretary Santosh Kumar Mishra, Advocate. Its subject line refers to the respect and dignity of advocates. Copies have been marked to the Registrar General of the Supreme Court and to Justice Bhanot.

According to the Association, Justice Bhanot, who was sitting in Court No. 49, has put in place a practice under which a separate chair is kept in the next row for a police officer or any other senior official attending his courtroom. The letter objects to this arrangement and describes it as a new practice of seating a particular person.

The Association alleged that, in the course of the proceedings, a Superintendent of Police of a district was seated in the row behind the Additional Government Advocate (AGA).

An advocate is stated to have respectfully asked the officer to move back, telling him, “यह आपकी सीट नहीं है” (this is not your seat). The letter claims that the AGA rebuked the advocate and said that he would complain to the Judge as soon as the Judge arrived.

The letter further alleges that, once Justice Bhanot entered the courtroom, the AGA complained against the advocate. The Association claimed that the Judge pointed a finger towards the advocate and, in harsh words, passed an order to send him to jail. When the advocate sought to apologise, the Judge is alleged to have asked him to apologise to the Superintendent of Police instead. The Association stated that the advocate did tender an apology to the officer, but that the Judge compelled him to do so.

The Association also alleged that Justice Bhanot mocked senior advocate V.P. Srivastava, who was present in the courtroom, which, according to the letter, caused a serious blow to the dignity of respected advocates. The letter characterised the Judge’s alleged conduct as falling in the category of contempt.

Calling upon the Chief Justice to take serious cognizance of the matter and to take appropriate action, the Association cautioned that, failing which, the High Court Bar Association would boycott the court of Justice Ajay Bhanot.

इससे यह स्पष्ट है कि यदि कोर्ट, अधिवक्ता का अपमान करने के लिए स्वतंत्र है तो अधिवक्ता भी कोर्ट का अपमान करने से पीछे नहीं हटेगा।

The letter concluded with a pointed remark that if the court is free to insult an advocate, the advocate too will not hold back from insulting the court.
