Delhi Riots: Delhi High Court Says No Hearing Till 20th March In Delhi Violence Cases

The Delhi high court on Thursday (March 12, 2020) adjourned till March 20, 2020, hearing on a batch of petitions pertaining to Delhi riots. The division bench comprising Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Hari Shankar will hear all the pleas and impleadment applications pertaining to Delhi riots on March 20, 2020.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, sought more time to modify the replies. The court granted him time for the same. The court also sought response from Delhi government and Commissioner of Police on a separate plea seeking action against Sonia Gandhi, Waris Pathan, Kapil Mishra and other politicians for allegedly making hate speeches.

The plea further sought constitution of a SIT and computation of the damage caused to the public property and then to attach and sell the properties of Waris Pathan, Sonia Gandhi, Kapil Mishra, Salman Khurshid and other concerned parties in the plea to disburse the amount to the victims affected by the riots in the interest of justice.

One of the petitions sought directions from the court, including immediate filing of FIRs against Mishra, Thakur, Verma and others for alleged hate speech, rioting, murder and arson. Another petition sought medical and humanitarian intervention for the victims and those displaced due to the riots in the northeastern part of Delhi.

The violence broke out in the north east parts of Delhi when two groups opposing and supporting the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) clashed with each other in areas like Seelampur, Maujpur, ChandBagh and Jaffrabad where the protestors torched houses and shops in the local vicinity. Over 40 people lost their lives in this horrific incident. And over 200 people incurred severe injuries.
