Mumbai: Mumbai’s Bandra Magistrate Court on Friday issued a show-cause notice to the Amboli Police for failing to comply with its earlier directive in a defamation and stalking case filed by Yasmeen Wankhede against NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) leader and former Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik.
On January 20, the court had directed the Amboli Police to conduct a preliminary inquiry under Section 202 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), which allows a magistrate to postpone action pending an investigation. However, nearly six months have passed, and the police have yet to submit their report. As a result, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Ashish Awari has now sought a written explanation for the delay, with a response due by July 28.
The complaint, filed through Advocate Ali Kaashif Khan Deshmukh, stems from an ongoing dispute dating back to January 2021, when Sameer Wankhede, then Zonal Director of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), led a drug raid that resulted in the arrest of Malik’s son-in-law. Yasmeen Wankhede—Sameer’s elder sister—has alleged that Malik launched a public smear campaign in retaliation, making personal and defamatory remarks about her family on social media and in interviews.
Malik allegedly made derogatory comments about Sameer Wankhede’s religion, marital life, and qualifications, and later extended those accusations to include Yasmeen Wankhede. According to the complaint, these actions were made with malicious intent to tarnish the family’s reputation and cause mental harassment.
The feud escalated in October 2021 when Wankhede’s team arrested actor Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan in a widely publicised drugs case. Malik was among the most vocal critics of the investigation, which ultimately ended without a chargesheet.
With the Amboli Police failing to act on the court’s directive, the magistrate has now demanded a written explanation before proceeding further. The matter has been listed for hearing on July 28, 2025.
