SCAORA Disapproves Calls For CJIs Resignation Urges Respect For Judicial Independence

New Delhi: The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA) have each issued a notice dated 12 October 2026, with the SCBA asking its members to wear a white ribbon on 13 October 2026 and observe one minute of silence in solidarity with fellow advocates who were reportedly mistreated and manhandled by the police, and the SCAORA expressing strong disapproval of statements made in the public domain calling for the resignation of the Chief Justice of India.

In its circular dated 12 October 2026, issued in view of the SCBA's resolution dated 10 October 2026, the SCBA stated that the majority of the Executive Committee members have decided that advocates and members of the bar may wear a white ribbon pinned to their coats on 13 October 2026, as a mark of solidarity with fellow advocates who were reportedly mistreated and manhandled by the police. Members were also requested to gather in front of the Gandhi statue at 1:15 p.m. on 13 October 2026 to observe one minute of silence in solidarity with members of the Bar. The circular is signed by Pragya Baghel, Hony. Secretary, and carries the names of the SCBA's office bearers, including President Pradeep Kumar Rai, Senior Advocate, and Vice President Rahul Kaushik, Senior Advocate.

On the other hand the SCAORA, in a resolution dated 12th October 2026 (Ref No. 099 SCAORA 2026 - 2028), stated that it expresses its strong disapproval of statements made in the public domain calling for the resignation of the Chief Justice of India. It said that the judiciary is a constitutional institution entrusted with upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of all citizens, that any grievance concerning judicial functioning must be raised through appropriate legal and constitutional channels, and that public statements seeking the resignation of the head of the judiciary risk undermining the dignity of the office and public confidence in the institution.

The SCAORA urged all concerned to respect the independence of the judiciary and maintain the dignity and decorum of the Supreme Court of India, adding that the judicial process must be allowed to function independently, without pressure or interference. The resolution is signed by Yugandhara Pawar Jha, Hony. Secretary, for the SCAORA.
