Tushar Mehta Reappointed As Solicitor General Of India For Three Year Term

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the reappointment of senior advocate Tushar Mehta as the Solicitor General of India (SG) for a further term of three years.

As per an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on June 20, 2026, Mehta’s fresh term will take effect from July 1, 2026.

Mehta has served as the Union Government’s second-highest law officer since October 10, 2018. With this latest extension, he is set to complete eleven years in the post by the end of his fresh tenure, making him one of the longest-serving law officers in the country’s history. Before his elevation to Solicitor General, Mehta joined the Centre’s legal team as an Additional Solicitor General in 2014 and previously served as the Additional Advocate General for Gujarat.

Throughout his tenure, Mehta has been a prominent legal face for the government, representing the Union of India in landmark cases involving constitutional interpretation, national security, citizenship issues, taxation, and Centre-State disputes.

In addition to Mehta’s extension, the ACC approved the reappointment of five Additional Solicitors General (ASGs) for the Supreme Court for another three-year term. The reappointed law officers include:

  • Vikramjit Banerjee and K.M. Nataraj, whose fresh terms will commence on July 1, 2026.
  • Suryaprakash V. Raju, N. Venkataraman, and Aishwarya Bhati, whose reappointments take effect from June 30, 2026.

The government also reappointed senior advocate Chetan Sharma as the ASG for the Delhi High Court for a further period of six months, starting July 1, 2026. All these reappointments are for the specified terms or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
